Everything you need to know about the Piano Adventures Exams.

General Exam Introduction

Mission Statement for the Piano Adventures Exams

To give students an engaging, musical experience to “examine” what they know—while celebrating achievement and developing the student’s musical mind and heart.

Overview of the Exams

Each level of the Piano Adventures Online Exams consists of a Theory Exam and a Performance Exam. It is recommended for students to take both Exams, if possible. Students who successfully pass both Exams receive the Piano Adventures Diploma. The “Adventurer Diploma” celebrates the student’s holistic musical development and achievement. The Theory and Performance Exams may be taken in either order.

Students may also choose to participate in just one of the Exams for a specific level. In this case, passing students are awarded a Certificate of Completion for that particular Exam.

Student and Parent/Guardian Requirements for the Exams

Piano Adventures Exams requires that each student has a Teacher in order to participate. Students must be at least 5 years old to participate in the Piano Adventures Exams.

Enrollment can be started by the Parent/Guardian if the student is under 18 years old. For those under 18, the Parent/Guardian enrolls the student and the student’s Profile is automatically registered under the Parent/Guardian Account. Note: Parents/Guardians may use their existing Exam Account for any additional children.

Those students 18 and over may enroll and create a Piano Adventures Exam Account on their own.

Teacher Accounts for the Exams

Teachers who are 18 and older may start the Enrollment process for their students. After a Teacher’s Exam Account has been created, the Account is registered in the Piano Adventures Exam system. Teachers use their existing Exam Account for additional students.

Note: Existing Piano Adventures Teacher Atlas members may log in using the same email address associated with their Piano Adventures Teacher Atlas Account.

Theory Exam Introduction

Theory Exam Overview

The Theory Exams are an online and on-demand Exam. The Exams support the concepts presented in the eight levels of the Basic Piano Adventures curriculum. Each Exam level matches the corresponding level of the Piano Adventures Basic Method. The eight levels of instruction are:

  • Primer Level
  • Level 1
  • Level 2A
  • Level 2B
  • Level 3A
  • Level 3B
  • Level 4
  • Level 5

The Exam platform and resource materials currently support the Primer Theory Exam and Primer Performance Exam. The Level 1 Theory and Performance Exams will be released in Fall 2024 with additional levels coming soon.

Content and Preparation for the Theory Exams

Content for the Theory Exams is drawn from the concepts in the Piano Adventures Lesson and Theory Books. To ensure the most successful Exam preparation, it is highly recommended that Teachers use the Piano Adventures Unit Assessments correlated to each level of the Basic Method. The Unit Assessments are available in a colorful print book or online in the Teacher Atlas. Note: The Assessments are a teacher support tool and not a book the student is required to purchase.

Format for the Theory Exams

The primary format for the Theory Exam is questions with multiple choice answers. The questions cover the theory concepts for that level. For example, the Primer Theory Exam has 6 sections and covers the following:

  • Your Hands
  • Key Names
  • Music Terms
  • Rhythm
  • Reading
  • Ear-Training
Sample Theory Exam Questions

Explore Sample Primer Theory Exam Questions. Students, Parents/Guardians, and Teachers will enjoy becoming acquainted with the Theory Exam presentation and interface, plus seeing the Exam mascot Trophy in action!

Guided Audio Narration

Pleasant, guided audio narration is offered for students who wish to have each question read aloud. This narration is seamlessly integrated into the Theory Exam design. Though students can easily “opt out” from the guided narration, please note that the Ear-Training audio examples are required in order for students to listen/respond to the final Exam section: Ear-Training.

Theory Exam Time Limit

While there is no time limit, the Primer Theory Exam takes approximately 20 minutes. Students should complete the Exam in “one sitting,” if at all possible. Theory Results are approximately available 5 days after the Theory Exam is submitted.

Minimum Age

Students must be at least 5 years old to participate in the Piano Adventures Exams. For the Primer Theory Exam, young students should be secure enough in their reading skills to take the Exam without assistance. Guided Audio Narration is available and encouraged for students to hear each question read aloud at a relaxed pace.

Note: Adult assistance with Theory Exam set-up is encouraged for younger students. However, students should take the Theory Exam itself independently, without help from an adult or other party.

Theory Exam Scoring & Awards

Theory Exam Scoring

The Theory Exam has 70 questions. Each question is worth one point for a total of 70 points. The required passing score is 70% (49 points) or higher.

Earning the Piano Adventures Exam Diploma

Students who successfully pass both the Theory and Performance Exams will be awarded the Piano Adventures Exam Diploma. The Diploma will be available as a printable download in the dashboard of the Student, Teacher, and Parent/Guardian no later than 28 days after the Performance Exam has been submitted. When applicable, a brief summary of the incorrectly answered questions will be included.

Earning the Theory Certificate of Completion

Students who successfully pass only the Theory Exam will receive a Certificate of Completion. The Theory Certificate will be available as a printable download in the dashboard of the Student, Teacher, and Parent/Guardian approximately 5 days after the Theory Exam has been completed. When applicable, a brief summary of the incorrectly answered questions is included.

Note: At any time, the student enrolled in the Theory Exam may enroll for the Performance Exam (at the same level) to earn the Piano Adventures Exam Diploma. The Piano Adventures Exam Diploma is then awarded with a confirmed passing Performance score.

If the Student has enrolled in both Theory and Performance Exams, and passes the Theory Exam first, a Certificate of Completion will be issued until the results of the Performance Exam are available. Pending a passing Performance Exam, the Exam Diploma (given when two Exams of the same level are passed) will be awarded. This also will be found as a printable download in the dashboard of the Student, Teacher, and Parent/Guardian. The downloadable Certificate of Completion will simply be updated with the downloadable Exam Diploma.

Nomination to The Bravo Board for Theory Leaders

Students earning a score of 97% (68 points) or higher earn the title of Theory Leader! These students will be nominated for The Bravo Board—an area of the Piano Adventures Exam website where outstanding students in Theory and Performance are recognized. Parent/Guardian permission is required in order for students to be featured on The Bravo Board. Permission may be granted via the dashboard on the Parent/Guardian Exam Account.

Students who are “Theory Leaders” are featured on The Bravo Board for a period of 1 year. Each student has a personalized congratulatory message that will include: first name, last initial, Exam level, location (if provided), and date the Exam was passed. Students, their families, and friends can enjoy this time of recognition. At the end of 1 year, the posting is removed from The Bravo Board. However, students are encouraged to be recognized again in Theory and/or Performance at a higher Piano Adventures level!

Note that students and their Parents/Guardians may opt out of participation on The Bravo Board simply by not activating the Permission Request found in the Parent/Guardian dashboard.

Theory Exam Retakes

The Theory Exam has a total of 70 questions (1 point per question). A score of 70 points equals 100%. The minimum passing score is 49 points (70%).

Students who receive a Theory Exam score of 48 points or less are considered “Developing.” These students can retake the exam one time for no additional fee. Students can access the free Exam retake via the dashboard on the Student Exam Account. Once a “Developing” result is received, students will have 30 days in which to retake the free Theory Exam.

Teachers are encouraged to review the missed questions with the student, as well as use the Unit Assessments to prepare for the Theory Exam retake. These actions help ensure a stronger theory background as the student advances in piano study.

Upon passing the Theory Exam retake, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Completion (if only the Theory Exam is taken) or the Exam Diploma (if both Theory and Performance Exams are being taken).

Theory Exam Technology

Technology Requirements

The Theory Exam may be taken using any digital device with a web browser that has internet access. For the best viewing experience, use a computer or tablet when taking the Exam. Before the Exam starts, there will be a sound check. This ensures that the requirements for the audio/browser are met for successful Exam delivery. The Parent/Guardian is encouraged to assist with the sound check for younger students. However, once the sound check is successfully completed, students should proceed independently with the Theory Exam, without help from an adult or other party.

Technology Issues

In the event that internet connection is lost during the Theory Exam, all answers will be automatically saved up to the point of lost connectivity. Once connectivity is restored, students have 24 hours to log in again and resume their Exam. If a student is unable to complete the Exam in the 24 hour period, please contact exams@pianoadventures.com for additional Exam support.

Performance Exam Introduction

Performance Exam Overview

The Performance Exam is an online exam that supports the skills, repertoire, and pianistic artistry in the Piano Adventures curriculum. The Exam platform and resources currently support the Primer Level Performance Exam. The Level 1 Theory and Performance Exams will be released in Fall 2024 with additional levels coming soon.

For the Performance Exam, students prepare 3 pieces from their level, selecting one piece from Repertoire Lists 1, 2, and 3. Each piece is video recorded separately. The student’s Parent/Guardian will then upload and submit the student’s 3 unedited Video performances via the Exam platform. The Videos are then ready for Teacher approval. Upon Teacher approval, the Videos then proceed to Evaluation by a Piano Adventures Exam Coach.

Note: If the Student is 18 years or older, the Student may upload the Videos and perform the steps above instead of a Parent/Guardian.

Repertoire Lists for the Performance Exams
  • List 1 presents lively pieces.
  • List 2 presents slower pieces.
  • List 3 is called the Student’s Choice.
This piece may be selected from over 130 Primer pieces from the Piano Adventures Library. List 3 pieces may be played as a Solo or with the Teacher Duet.

Please visit Repertoire Lists to view the complete listings.

Memorization for the Performance Exams

There is no memorization requirement. Students are welcome to play with their music or play by memory. The focus is on a musical performance!

Published Score and Usage

Students are required to use published music scores or authorized digital scores, and should not use photocopies or screenshots of any material.

List 3 Duets for the Performance Exam

Students have the option of playing a List 3 piece as a Duet with their Teacher. Playing a Duet is not required, but it is a fun option!

Please note:

  • Comments will be written for the Student only.
  • When preparing a Video Duet, make sure that the Student is in full camera view. Occasionally, Students may wish to play a Duet with a parent, older sibling, or other musical partner. This is welcome if the Teacher is comfortable with the ensemble performance.

Performance Exam Prep - Model Performance Videos

Performance Exam Preparation

Explore all the pieces available for the Piano Adventures Exams with the Model Performance Videos. These are available as Solo Video performances and Duet Audio recordings.

Their use is two-fold:

  • First, they present the Piano Adventures Library to the teacher who may not have access to all the books. Peruse the many choices in a relaxed setting. Consider sharing the videos with students to help with Performance preparation.
  • Second, they “model” the piece for students and parents demonstrating tempo, dynamics, and good technique.

The Duet Audio recordings are under the title, PLAY DUETS! These encourage students and teachers to listen while watching the score for a particular musical concept. They are not meant to be used for learning pieces by rote. Quite the opposite! Students can glean much musical insight by watching the score and listening! Then, playing the piece, with the benefit of teacher coaching, brings out their own “model performance.”

The downloadable Certificate of Completion will then be updated with the downloadable Exam Diploma.

Nomination to The Bravo Board for Performance Champs

Any student’s performance of a List 1, 2, or 3 piece that receives the highest rating of “Excellent” in all 5 categories is nominated for The Bravo Board. This is an area of the Piano Adventures Exam website where outstanding students in Theory and Performance are recognized. In the event that more than one piece has earned 5 Excellent ratings, the Piano Adventures Exam Coach will select which piece is nominated.

Parent/Guardian permission is required for students to be featured on The Bravo Board. Permission may be granted via the dashboard of the Parent/Guardian Account.

Performance Champs will be highlighted on the Bravo Board for a period of 1 year. Each student has a spotlight performance that includes: first name, location (if provided), piece title, level, and the nominated Performance Video. Students, their families, and friends can enjoy this time of recognition. At the end of 1 year, the posting is removed from The Bravo Board. However, students are encouraged to be recognized again in Theory and/or Performance at a higher Piano Adventures level!

Note: Students and their Parents/Guardians may opt out of participation on The Bravo Board simply by not activating the Permission Request found in the Parent/Guardian dashboard.

Students who receive a score of 101 or below on the Performance Exam are considered “Developing” and do not receive the Exam Diploma. (Please note that both Exams must be passed to earn an Exam Diploma.) If one of the Exams is not passed, students still receive a Certificate of Completion for their successfully-passed Exam. Students are encouraged to retake any unpassed Exam to earn the Exam Diploma.

Performance Exam Retakes

Students who receive a Performance Exam score of 52 points or less are considered “Developing.” Students who do not receive a passing score may retake the Performance Exam by enrolling again at the standard fee for that level.

Performance Exam Submission

Selecting Piece Titles

Student and Teacher work together to select one piece each from Repertoire Lists 1, 2, and 3. The selected titles can be input via the Exam dashboard by the Teacher, Student, or Parent/Guardian anytime after Enrollment payment is received with the student officially enrolled in the Performance Exam.

Video Recordings

Students will submit 3 unedited videos of themselves performing their selected pieces—one Video for each Performance piece. Each Video file will be uploaded by the Parent/Guardian to the Student Profile on the Exam Platform. The Videos can be uploaded starting on the first day of the Video Submission Window.

Video Submission Steps for the Performance Exams

The Video submission process requires specific actions by both the Teacher and the Parent/ Guardian. This 3-step process may occur during the dates given in the Video Submission Windows.

  • Step 1Upload
The Parent/Guardian uploads the Performance Video to the Exam Platform for Teacher approval.
  • Step 2Review
The Teacher receives an email notification from Piano Adventures Exams that the student’s uploaded Video is now ready for the Teacher’s review/approval. The Teacher reviews the student’s Video and makes one of the following decisions:

    • Option A: The student’s Video is approved and no further action is required. The Video proceeds to the Piano Adventures Exam Coach.
    • Option B: The student’s Video is not approved. The Teacher then indicates any action needed by the student for Video approval. For example, the wrong video was uploaded, performance in need of improvements, etc. As necessary, the student and Parent/Guardian amend the Video per the Teacher’s instructions. They then return to Step 1—Upload again for the Teacher’s approval.
  • Step 3Completion
The Student’s Parent/Guardian completes Steps 1 and 2, as needed, for each Performance Video. Upon Teacher approval of all 3 Videos, the Performance Exam automatically proceeds to the Piano Adventures Exam Coach for ratings and comments. Results will be shared within 28 days.

Note: If the Student is 18 years or older, the Student may upload the Videos and perform the steps above instead of a Parent/Guardian.

Performance Exam Technology

Video Requirements

Students will submit 3 unedited videos of themselves performing their selected pieces—one Video for each Performance piece. Any device may be used to record the Student’s performances provided the Videos are in an acceptable file format. Each Video file will be uploaded by the Parent/Guardian to the Student Account on the Exam Platform. The Exam platform supports the following Video file formats: MP4, WMV, MOV and MPG. The maximum file size accepted for each Video is 1GB.

Camera Position

For the best results, position the camera to allow for as much of the side profile of the Student (arms, hands, and fingers) to be in the Video as possible. When the damper pedal is required for a piece, it is helpful for the performer’s feet and pedals on the piano to be viewable.

Technology Issues

Once submitted, if a Video contains a significant formatting issue that prevents the Exam Coach from viewing the Video and providing comments, the Parent/Guardian will be contacted by the Exam Administrator. Note: This is highly unlikely to occur due to Teacher approval for each Performance Video.

Exam History

Records for Each Student’s Piano Adventures Exams

Previous Exam Results will be available in the “Past Exams” area of the Student or Parent/Guardian Exam Account. Access to Exam Coach comments, Theory scores, and digital Diplomas and Certificates, will be available.

Teachers will only be able to see the Exam history of students that were enrolled with them as a Teacher. Students will be able to view their entire Exam History.

Note that Video Performances will be deleted from Piano Adventures Exams within 1 year of release of your Performance Exam results. If you wish to have an archive of your Performance Exam submissions, it is an excellent idea to retain your carefully-prepared Performances on your own digital device.

Special Needs, Teacher Change, and Other

Special Needs Request

Please contact exams@pianoadventures.com if a student is in need of an accommodation to participate in an Exam. Or, if a problem arises for the student to participate in an Exam within the allotted scheduling window. Accommodations will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Teacher Change within the Exam Session

On rare occasions, if there is a Teacher change after Enrollment is started, please contact exams@pianoadventures.com.

Exam Pathways and Skipping Levels

It is recommended that students only enroll in one level at a time. (For example, Primer Theory Exam and Primer Performance Exam).

The best outcome for the Exams is for the student to progress from one level to the next level, enjoying the adventurous spirit of the Exams. Each consecutive level builds momentum, motivating the student’s musical journey. However, due to various circumstances, if a student is unable to participate in consecutive Exams, the teacher and student may sign up for the current level in which the student is studying. Upon successful completion of any Exam, students are welcome to register for the next Exam level.

Deleting Student Profiles

To delete a profile, the primary account holder can visit “Manage Profiles” on the Exam dashboard. For students under the age of 18 years old, only Parents/Guardians are able to delete the Student profile. If a Student profile is deleted, the Student or Parent/Guardian is responsible for retaining any Exam records independently.

Dishonesty in Test Taking

Actions of dishonesty are out of bounds and strictly unapproved in Piano Adventures Exams. This would include:

  1. Obtaining Exam questions and answers, exchanging them with others, or receiving help from another during the actual online Theory Exam. This applies to Students, Parent/Guardians, Teachers, and any others.
  2. Students exiting the Theory Exam and retrieving help either on their own, or with others, and then returning to the Theory Exam.
  3. Editing the Performance Video in any way. A performance from beginning to end, without editing, is the true and natural performance that is required.

Infringements such as above would disqualify a student from receiving a Certificate or Diploma, and perhaps from taking future Piano Adventures Exams.

Additional Concerns

All Piano Adventures Exam results are final. Similarly, all Piano Adventures Exam policies and deadlines are firmly established. If a Student, Parent/Guardian, or Teacher has a genuine concern or extenuating circumstance that warrants special consideration, please contact exams@pianoadventures.com within 30 days of when your Exam was taken. These will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
